My mentor, professor and guru, Doreen Gehry Nelson, kindly edited my first children's book "The Playroom Door" which will be published this spring. The gift of Doreen's time is akin to a genius giant giving aid to a struggling ant. Doreen is the mastermind behind Design-Based Learning, a methodology that has elevated teacher effectiveness and student learning by focusing on creating: the highest level of thinking.
Writing is creating. One begins with a blank page and somehow creates a world on it. You sweat. And pace. You write and delete. You rethink, re-start, and frown. You research for hours, eke out a sentence, re-read it and wonder if it makes sense. You research again and re-set your focus. You revise. You know that it still needs revamping. But you lift your gaze and begin composing the next sentence.
Writers accept that this is simply the writing process. We struggle through it because we believe we have a story, a message, a way to inspire, a thought worth sharing. Doreen's mission is to empower teachers and students to think in never-before-seen ways. Through our books, we both strive to empower children with problem-solving skills and the imagination to create the best world possible.
